Being a “helper”: important Center updates & resources

April 14, 2020

Dear Center Community,

Together, we will stay true to our mission – providing a safe space, loving peer support, outreach, and education to grieving children, teens, families, and the community.

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”

This wonderful quote from Fred Rogers provides warmth for us all.  It is the Center’s honor to be a “helper” in these uncertain times.

Last week we held our first virtual “Center Chat” with 46 of our beloved peer support facilitators.  In this virtual place we supported one another, we listened, and we helped one another. We will continue to host these “Center Chats” with facilitators, friends, and the community because this support provides us with incredible strength.

Our new updates:

  • We continue to host virtual staff meetings each week.
  • We are supporting our families by phone and email.
  • With the guidance of our special technology team, we have selected our platform to help us restore our peer support groups. Stay tuned!
  • Former Facilitator and Board President, Patrick Veroneau and the Center held a webinar on “How to Navigate Stress in Isolation” with over 150 registrants. If you’d like to watch the recording click here: https://vimeo.com/405848191.
  • NEWSCENTER Maine has provided amazing media coverage. Click here to see their report:  https://bit.ly/2XDspkT
  • We are planning virtual “Family Nights” for families to gather. Further information will be forthcoming.
  • Facilitators have shared their gratitude to see each other in this new virtual space.
  • We are in contact with our school community to determine how to support their needs.
  • We have held virtual groups for Bereaved Parents and Teens – more on the way this week.

Be there for one another and let us know how we can help. We will get through this together and stronger.

Warmly,

Anne Heros, Executive Director
Julie Grosvenor, MD, Board President
Mary Larkin, Vice President
Kevin Chase, Treasurer
Robert Baldacci, Secretary
