Volunteering at The Center for Grieving Children is an opportunity to give your time and skills to make an important difference in the life of a child, teen, family, and the community. Our volunteers are our most valuable resource - generous people from the community, supporting families at a difficult and lonely time.
All potential volunteers interested in joining fall, winter, or spring training sessions must attend an orientation first. The orientation is a time for you to learn more about the training, our programs, ask questions, and determine whether or not you would like to become a Volunteer Facilitator for The Center's Peer Support Groups. Volunteer Facilitators are asked to make a commitment of one-year. To ensure the safety of our families and volunteers, background checks are done on all volunteers.
Office Support
General support is always needed, from helping with mailings, reproduction of material, data entry, and filing to organizing group rooms or closets and working on special projects. We have a use for any time or skill you would like to contribute.
Support Group Facilitators
Facilitators work with children and their families one night or afternoon a week (depending on the program). All facilitators go through an intense 30-hour training before being placed in a support group. Volunteers are asked to make a one-year commitment. Facilitators are currently needed for our Tender Living Care Program (for families affected by serious illness), Bereavement Peer Support, and Multicultural Peer Support Programs.
Special Events and Fundraising
There are numerous projects related to special events, such as follow-up with attendees and sponsors, coordinating and recruiting of volunteers, distributing materials, committee opportunities, etc. The list is endless! We have 4 major events a year: The Auction Gala in February, Pet and People Walk in May, our Golf Tournament in September and the Maine Marathon in October.
If you have a special gift, such as grant writing or web research on funding, please let us know! Some volunteers organize small fundraising events as well. Fun ideas are always welcome!
Board of Directors
We are always looking for new board members with various areas of expertise (i.e., marketing, fundraising, governance, accounting, and program development). The Center has a "working" Board with members participating on Committees and special projects.
