From the point of diagnosis the Tender Living Care (TLC) Program is able to help children, teens, and adults cope with the changes and losses that come along with serious illness. TLC is there to support hope and give assistance to caregivers in finding sensitive ways of communicating with and guiding children during difficult times.
We offer weekly peer support groups for children and teens ages 3-18 as well as for the adult with illness and the caregiver in the family. Peer support groups are facilitated by trained volunteers who are supervised by a staff person and consultant.
Groups meet on Monday evenings in Portland, Maine. Groups for ages 3-6, 7-9, 10-13, 14-18, adults with illness and caregivers meet at the same time so the whole family can attend together. Group members find a safe place where common issues and feelings can be explored. Volunteers incorporate art, music, talking, and play into their work with children. New members are welcome to join at any time. Groups are free of charge and available for as long as needed.
The Young Adult Group offers volunteer led peer support in a small group setting to individuals' ages 19-30 who are experiencing the serious illness of a family member or friend. New members are welcome to join at any time. Groups are free of charge and available for as long as needed.
Center staff is available to answer questions and concerns about supporting children dealing with a family member's serious illness over the phone. We offer resources information and referrals as needed. We present to schools, community organizations, conferences, and in the workplace.
